ENOMEM in do_get_write_access, retrying

i have a rhel3 system with the 2.4.21-20ELhugemem kernel. I keep receiving the errors listed below in my /var/log/messages file:

ENOMEM in do_get_write_access, retrying

a few days ago my server crashed. I would like to know what's message means.
