DNS

Hi,

I have configured DNC services in redhat enterprises 5 and if I check the dns resolution in any windows computer the IP address of this Linux DNS computer as primary DNS and type Nslookup and I am getting reply as below given

C:\nslookup
Default Server: hostname.Domain name.com.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa
Address: 192.168.0.1

If you can see it shows host name and domain name along with reverse IP address etc.

I guess it should show hostname .domain name.com
Please help me to fix the problem , so it can show only FQDN of the DNS server with out IP address.

Thanks

I am not sure what you want to accomplish. DNS server has to be specified by IP, as it should be first contacted before you have working domain name resolution. nslookup is intended to be useful for simple diagnostics. So it prints out IP address of DNS server as it is the information you will want once something goes wrong (on the Windows side). Moreover, if something goes wrong only IP will be accessible - nslookup will not even be able to find FQDN. FQDN is only printed for completeness (as you may better remember servers by hostname than by IP). But printing FQDN already requires working DNS (or big hosts file).
