Depthness of the RHCE topics

A general question for Red Hat certified engineers. How in depth does the topics go? Based on the red hat syllabus https://www.redhat.com/training/rhce...e_content.html Things like kernel manipulation, sendmail, and DNS can go pretty in depth.

However since the certification really encapsulate a broad amount of topics, I wonder what is the level of depthness on which this certification goes upon.

Some of the topics I got a bit of a chill where:
  • The Linux kernel: variants and modules
  • Setting up a host-based firewall
  • The SELinux security layer
  • Kickstart: a hands-free method of installation
  • Configuring the GRUB boot loader
  • Authentication Configuration: Pluggable Authentication Modules
  • Network Authentication
  • Protecting the system using a packet filtering host-based firewall
  • Using sendmail and postfix

Some of this are put up as the only thing required is learning to use the service (rather than configuring it) such as sendmail. While others are a bit broad, like Network Authentication.

Or the kernel variants might just be just understanding the concepts on the kernels and definitions to a full management of modules configuration and recompilation of it.

Can anyone comment on how real does this topic list to the actual certification requirement?

oh, made up word of the day, Depthness. must use it today somehow.

it's sadly very shallow in my opinion. the changes you make to things like postfix, squid, apache, are generally highly trivial comapred to a normal use of the server within a working environment.

Great, thanks.

For example there is a video on a guy going on about vhost at the RHEC training page. I wouldn't consider virtual host as a general use of apache. I would consider this to be an advanced topic within apache.

really? I would consider that compared to mod_proxy and SSL, virtual hosts are absolute Apache 101. I'd have to kill you if i told you much more, but yes there was virtual hosts stuff in my rhce, but very very very basic stuff.
