[will it work?] Linux Server in Windows (NT) network

Hi,

I'm opening a youthcentre and have a tight budget. The childeren which will use the computers (clients) have 0 expirience in Linux enviroments and therefor have i choosed for Windows (XP) clients. But after checking the license costs for Windows Server if find it costing (to) much.

Hence i want to use a Linux Server which i want to use a DNS, AD, DHCP server.
First the most important question.

Is this possible?
If yes, please help me with the following questions.
If no, i'm writing this whole topic for nothing.

To make it more overview i'll make this thread in topics for better overview.

0. About the Project
1. Server Information
2. Network Settings and Rules
3. Centralised User structure
4. File Server (and user directories)
5. Security (and CC-camera envirement)
6. Online Sevrices (DNS, HTTP, FTP, MAIL)
7. Administration
8. Web-based user envirement

0. About the project
I am a 18-year old Windows expirienced user.
Last year i entered a compentition where i needed to construct a plan to make my district a better envirement for childeren. My plan was to open youth-dentre for the childeren. Herefor i got a budget of €15.000.
I am nolw in the last step of the project and i will be oppening the centre next week. As we need to use the budget the whole year i'm not supposed to spends the whole budget now. I'm the network admin now.

1. Server Information
The server will NOT be a Hard-Core 19" server. It will be a desktop Server with a dual Core Pentium 2.2 GHz with 2 GB ram. So i think it'll be good enough.

2. Network Settings and Rules.
As there will be a Wireless Network with temporary cliënts i will need a DHCP server.

3. Centralised User structure
I want to create a Active Directory (or something relevant) so user-accounts will be store centralised. And i want to create a web-based secure envirement, but this will be later discussed.

4. File Server (and user directories)
As i wan't to use an AD like structure i'll need to be able to make back-ups therefore i think i'll be easier to save user documents on the server and then back-up to DAT-tapes.
Which program/service will be recommend for this?

5. Security (and CC-Camera envirement)
As theft is rising in the world, security online and in real-life is a essential thing. I'll need to connect two security camera's to the server and store the images on the sever (and if possible on a remote location). I know Live AXIS has special hardware for this, but my budget is to thight herefor.

6. Online Services (DNS, HTTP, FTP, MAIL)
The childeren want to make there home-work on the computers it'll be the best if there files will be accessible from there home-computers. Hence he online server.
The coding part isn't a problem, but is this possible?
I want to make a authentication rule with the AD (like in IIS with AD-user authentication)
I wan't to use a mailserver for the employees as we wil organise lot's of projects.

7. Administration
Admistration is a vital issue, as i am the network administrator i'll need to manage the whole network. But i can't be there all the time. I'll need a program by which the following features will be good to have:
- User management
- Parental Control on website's
- File management

8. Web-based user envirement
As referred in some chapter i want to make some files accessible for the owner through the web-envirement. Herefor i wan't to use a PHP-based web application with a heavy authentication and certificates hand out manually. I also wan't to combine user-DB for the website with the AD user-DB. I know this is possible through LDAP.

I hope you Linux Guru's can recommend me a good Distro and applications. As i appriciate any helps.

Kind Regards,
Oguzhan Uysal

PS. Sorry for my bad grammar, as English isn't my primary language.

As the first post is a bit big i will post this edit as a reply.

I read something about SAMBA, but i don't know if this will work properly.

Is this a good solution?
