install directFB path problem

Hi all,
I've been trying to follow some tutorials on compiling directFB on ARM. All seems well except a couple of libs it uses (which I have already cross compiled) are calling my system libs from configure rather than my cross compile libaries.
Configure shows

PNG yes -I/usr/include/libpng14 -lpng14

Building Font Modules:
FreeType2 yes -I/usr/include/freetype2 -lfreetype

But it should show my cross compiled build, which are in
/root/DirectFBArm/staging/usr/......

I've set paths and also used PKG_CONFIG_PATH & PKG_CONFIG_SYSROOT_DIR with my configure but it still shows my "host" libs. I call the configure with


LDFLAGS=-L/root/DirectFBArm/staging/usr/lib CPPFLAGS=-I/root/DirectFBArm/staging/usr/include PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/root/DirectFBArm/staging/usr/lib/pkgconfig/ PKG_CONFIG_SYSROOT_DIR=/root/DirectFBArm/staging/ PATH=/root/DirectFBArm/staging/usr/bin:$PATH CC=arm-linux-gcc ./configure --host=arm-linux --prefix=/usr --with-gfxdrivers=none --with-inputdrivers=keyboard,linuxinput

I presume it won't work because it's calling the wrong libs/includes, can anyone advise? Thanks in advance

Well I've found one answer pkg config will not config on older version <0.23. So basically Debian and Ubuntu users need to download source and build for the command to work
