You can install the Linux kernel alone without a distro?

What I do is download from kernel.org Linux kernel and then install it alone and let it run with internet connection and then putting on several package managers (I like the debian and gentoo) and you have a custom system that supports . deb for compatibility and well built by portage to source code.

PS: I used FreeBSD and I like but I wanted to make a more personalized and more compatible.

PD2: What is your opinion about some people say that FreeBSD is more stable, faster and safer it is true?.

PD3: Sorry for my English is translated from Spanish into English by google translate

I have no opinion concerning your question. Ask a question and give as much info as possible.

You can't really just compile the Linux kernel and plop it on a PC and go, you do need some userspace programs (like the shell, coreutils, etc) to be able to use it.Sounds like you want to build your own distro. Check out Linux From Scratch.

I think FreeBSD's pretty personalized since you have to build it from the ground up, but could you be a little more specific about what you want it (I assume "it" is the Linux Kernel) to be more compatible with? Are you having hardware issues with FreeBSD?

Depends on the distro. I'd say that FreeBSD (as a FreeBSD user myself) is faster and safer than 95% of Linux distros, but there's always Gentoo, Slackware and the like. It's built for stability, so obviously few can compete in that area.
