Yet another 'Which distro for me?' thread...

Sorry.

But, I've got lots of free time this winter and need a couple projects to keep me sharp.

My main reason for switching is to create a multipurposed server for my home network. I have a roommate that saturates our connection from time to time while torrenting so instead of buying another router with a Quality of Service feature to throttle his bandwidth I thought I would put my game server box to more good use. So, I'm looking for routing, NAT, firewall, and the capability to throttle by IP. FTP and general file sharing is also a plus, as well as VNC control from my main windows machine and a bittorrent seeder from time to time.

Like I said previously, I'm using this comp as a Quake III server, p3 1.260ghz w/ 512MB of ram. I'm also planning on running a minor Quake IV server, maybe 4-6 playerslots. My second question is will I still be able to run at least one of these servers while using this machine as a router/gateway/ftp/etc.? I actually did have an old K6 that I gave away to the comcast guy a couple months ago as I wasn't using it. Would have been perfect for security/network box.

I guess you need to know my experience level...I'm still really newbie even though I've used multiple distributions over the past 2-3 years for somewhat extended periods of time. Speed and stability are the main issues. The q3 server has to stay and router/firewall/bandwidth throttling are a must. I've downloaded the latest slack version and have read the intro to the how to in that forum and would like to have a go at it but I'm afraid I may be getting in over my head. Or maybe that's the point? Maybe I should just jump in.

Anyway, suggestions are appreciated.

Eric

I'd suggest you try FreeBSD. www.freebsd.org

I just read about someone who was wondering if debian or freebsd was better for him as server for cs. And on freebsd he had 500+fps, in debian with kernel optimized and everything only 330. And he was already using debian for 5 years, so he knew it well.

FreeBSD is very fast and stable. It's used on very big servers.
Check out http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/today/top.avg.html .

It's not linux. But it's quite similar and runs the same software as any linux. There are more then 13000 packages available for FreeBSD to be easily installed with binary packages or compiled with the brilliant ports system.
