XFree86 problem in Gentoo 1.4 Installation
I am attempting to install Gentoo 1.4 on my machine.
XFree86 is not working correctly. When I "# startx" it gives me errors such as "Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/XFree86" and "Problem parsing the config file" Then: Fatal server error: no screens found [xfree86@xfree86.org e-mail address blip] XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining. Then it takes me back to the prompt, which is: cdimage / # Anyone know what could be wrong? Thanks, Ryan |
You have to set up your XF86Config file manually on Gentoo.
Did you use xf86cfg? If the program doesn't set up X correctly post your /etc/XF86Config and I'll take a look. |
Hi Eve,
you can have X probe your hardware and spit out it's own XFree file. This worked for me. Prior to that, I had the same problem as you (no screens found). at the command prompt, type XFree86 -Configure. After that, if you look at the XF86Config file, you'll see what it came up with. In my case, I had to add a DefaultDepth line in my Screen section for 16. give that a try. |
