I've tried RedHat, Mandrake, Suse, Slackware and Debian (I've also tried some BSD's but that's off-topic here). Each of them has its pros and cons. Each of them has tools to configure the system (except Slackware: you have to configure it by hand). For a beginner, i would say : "Use RedHat, Mandrake or Suse". For a more experienced user : "Use a Debian" (the one i'm using at the moment). And if you want to have your system entirely in control, use a Slackware. My preferred are Debian and Slackware. But it's a matter of taste ... Try them all and make your own opinion ...
