why gentoo?

Hi,
I currently use Slackware and Debian, although Slackware more than Debian these days. I've been thinking about trying a new distro, and I thought that I'd either do an lfs, or try gentoo. Now what I would ask all gentoo users out there to do is this: sell me gentoo
I would like an objective [I'm not sure how well that's going to turn out] reasoning on why gentoo is better than other distros. The things I like about Slackware are:

- it's very unix-like
- the filesystem layout is very neat and orderly [eg the init scripts]
- it doesn't load on anything that's not necessary, and even if it did, it's easy to check for that and remove [it's a minimal distro]

Now, I thought that if I made my own distro [a la LFS], then I could set it out how *I* wanted it, and not have any superfluous stuff.
So that's why gentoo caught my eye. Any sellers?

Question is along the same lines as: Why Linux? For all the same reasons, if it suits you then use it. No one will be able to tell you if you will like it unless you try it really.

Once you go Emerge, you'll never go back.

Do a Stage 1 install, configure what you want, and you have a lean, mean self compiled installation.

After this, with emerge you can stay with the lastest cutting edge of applications downloaded and compiled with emerge.

Gentoo users aren't salespeople. Why not try it yourself and see if it is for you.

If you aren't strong with the Linux 'Force' the install may turn you off. It is not for baby users.

hehe....I might try it given time. And mods, I'm sorry for what seems like a newbie question - I was bored, and was lazy....
at the moment, I'm on an LFS campaign
