My whitebox is running but it did not configure eth0 right. I set it to use dhcp because i have a router. but that did not work. So i tryed to edit ifcfg-eth0 but what do I edit it with in comand line? Please list a list of command line editors I may have installed. I am going to look at my install log too.

if you did the default install of whitebox you have VI as one of your editors.

so just vi filename and you are in.

I am guessing that this also happend with mandrake. When i installed mandrake with cd1 it asked for cd2 + 3 so I pressed cancel. When I booted it up, it would not accept my root password. I did the same installation 2 times.
The boot.iso booted, you asked for ftp installation, but you got no connection....

What messages did you receive? Did you get an IP address by DHCP etc. ? What URL did you give for the connection?

I do not understand what IIS6 has to do with this. I doubt many Linux download sites bother with IIS at all.

Even if your root password is not accepted, you can still get in... Use the CD in rescue mode. Change the password and so on.

Here are the details for one guy's ftp install of Mandrake 10 Official.
FTP install

Its fine, i have whitebox up and running but I can't put it online. I have configured the ifcfg-eth0 file with this:

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
BROADCAST=192.168.0.255
IPADDR=192.168.0.100
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes
TYPE=Ethernet

I don't know if this is right. Please note I do have a router with the DMZ host forwarding 192.168.1.102 for the server. Please help me configure this!

ok if i am reading you right you put your linux box on 192.168.0.x, but your router is fishing out 192.168.1.x

is that right? if so you should just move your static ip over to the .1 instead of .0, unless your router is subnetted and managed to deal with the .0 IP you gave your linux box.

To get to my router config I go to 192.168.1.1. I got that config file from someone who had a router, so I tried it.

While any Linux distro is good for a server , Debian is the distro that is considered and used extensively in a server environment , particulary in critical areas because of it's stability.

then if your router is 192.168.1.1 , then your Linux box needs to be on that same line...

try giving your linux box 192.168.1.5 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 a gateway of 192.168.1.1 and leave it at that for a static IP.

that should solve your problem. odds are high that your routers is the DHCP server and will not start feeding IPs until .100 or .50 so by going under the starting # you will not have to worry about an IP conflict.

Sorry for the trouble Lleb_KCir, but could you write that out? I don't know where to put the linux box ip or anything. Oh, when I restart eth0 it says this: "Determining IP information for eth0... Failed; no link present. Check cable? I know this ethernet cord works, oth lights are lit on my router. Please help!
