Which one do you use?
 

Just out of curiousity, I wanted to see the stats on which distributions we use. Behold, this is my reason for a poll. I know it's a very often asked question, "...which distro should I use?" So to have a poll might help some people make a decision. Here are the major ones.

red hat - though there are probably better ones to use. my local computer shop didn't have upto date versions of any other distrib other than red hat. next time i buy online.

ive had probs with red hat (mainly their redhat network 'up2date' service that plainly doesn't work) but all in all im pleased with it

downloading a whole iso image with a modem would be like pushing an orange though an eye

hey, we shouldn't make these types of remarks here that may offend others, and it would be hard enough to push any orange thru anyone's eye.

I use Slackware because it more closely follows the linux standards. Most of the other distributions attempt to enforce their version of "how it should be", which makes linux != linux. For example the location of config files, monster-omnipotent config files etc.

I originally started with SuSE, but found that I could not easily find my way in a Red Hat installation. As Linux/Unix admin, it is difficult enough switching between Solaris and Linux, without adding all the linux flavors, which is why I personally prefer Slackware. Certain niceties are appreciated, as long as they do not make changes to underlying system standards.

well before you changed it to just eye, you had japseye instead of just eye.. and that sounds a bit uncalled for as i am a moderator of this site and try my best to keep this site clean.
if you don't like it, you can go elsewhere to post comments that seem to be misunderstood and according to the english dictionary of words, japseye doesn't exist, so to me and before you edited your post, that seemed like a type of racist remark. so we can keep it like that.

Well I started using SuSE 6.4, it was the first linux distro that I've used and somehow I developed a feeling for it. I tried RedHat once but didn't like it (I was looking for a yast like tool, but didn't find it) so I decided to remain with SuSE. :)

Wow, i'm surprised from all of the people on the board that only 1 has answered Mandrake and 5 for SuSE! Interestink, veeewwwwy intewestink...

Thanks for voting. I know there are a lot more mandrake users out there. Just thought there would be more than the outcomes. No matter either way, it's neat to see what the going distro is these days.

I guess I could give SuSe a try someday...when I get tired of Mandrake. :D

I voted Red Hat, because thats what I'm comfortable with.
Ive tried a few of the popular versions, but always came back to good o'l Red.
I did try Debian a while back, just for a few days, and I really liked it.
When I feel more confident with Linux, I would like to give it another go.
The poll seems to indicate that it's one of the least popular. (so far)

I use Mandy because it's the first one I tried, and I kinda grown familiar with its own little way of doing things. I have tried RedHat (v7.0, I believe), but didn't really get on with it as I was still looking for the nice little Mandrake way-of-life. I have tried the SuSe LiveEval things (various versions), and I quite like them! But I'm not prepared to fork-out money for one just yet. I may buy a distro at some-point in the future, but since my Uni offers a nice T3 connection, I'm quite happy downloading and burning. I have tried to get Progeny to work, but so far my struggles have been fruitless. I do currently have Slack on my machine, but I don't really use it. I tried TurboLinux (I didn't know that it was the most popular distro in Asia until recently) simply because it was on the cover-DVD of a magazine. I've tried Phat. I have even tried FreeBSD, but at the end of the day, I still come home to Mandy.

All-in-all I am quite happy with my Mandy. I did like SuSe, but wasn't too happy with the option of LiveEval (ie Loopback based) or 'Pay for it'. What happened to the free-downloadable full version like most other distros seem to be able to offer?

I've used Red Hat 5.2, Mandrake 7.? , SuSE ?? and Debian.

I'm still using Debian and ain't shifting from it any time soon.

Installed the latest version of Mandrake on a housemates computer so he could try linux. It is awful, slow, bloated, buggy, clumbsy..
