Which linux distro for Asus EEE 1005PX
Hello all;
Mu netbook is an Asus EEE 1005PX. I want to install a light linux distro to have a fast netbook (it is not with Windows 7). I have tested from the USB Xubuntu (which I also have in my desktop) and Lubuntu, almost anything works well except for the Fn keys and some special features. Is there any linux distro specific for these netbooks, with the Fn keys working? Thank you in advance, |
There once were a few distros specific to low memory low storage netbooks. As netbooks got better and distro maintainers learned them, most major distros work fine on netbooks, or at least can be tweaked to do so. I've run CentOS, Mint, Slackware, Ubuntu, and Xubuntu on mine (two different models). The choice might be better made on the basis of what distro YOU happen to like after trying it. I put Slackware-current on one of mine this past weekend, just for testing, and it seems fine for me (I like Slackware and Xfce).

As netbooks go this is far from low powered: probably as good as this desktop! The Fn key problem was recorded by Ubuntu as a bug and there are unsolved posts on the Debian forum too. It also affected Fedora. Some people solved it by adding "acpi_osi=Linux" to the end of Grub's boot command.
My much older and smaller laptop runs Salix (Slackware with added software and user-friendliness): get a live disk of that and see how it goes. |

I usually like Ubuntu derivatives with lighter desktops. I have Xubuntu in my desktop machine. But something curious happens in the netbook. Xubuntu and Lubuntu do not recognze many of the Fn keys. On the other hand, Mint with Mate does, better than the same Mint version with Xfce. Quite a mistery for me... Cheers, |

Can reassign Fn keys (e.g: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1949210) but they worked fine for me in Debian.
