Cool

Slackware is the original Linux Distro. I recommend SLAX. It is small, auto-mounts and has a high capability of expansion software. Can also be configured smaller.. http://www.slax.org/download.php for the data and download. Go for it. I agree about Puppy Linux. However, Puppy starts way smaller than SLAX. That could increase the learning curve to enable the browser at the git-go.

I don't know if you still need advice or not but I minds well try. I also an very new to this and had to put a distro on a very old computer. I have used windows for 17 years and I was a little scared of having to be a code genius to use Linux. You don't have to be with some of these others you do. Now my situation had a little more wiggle room than yours does hardware wise but I have tried several and I will give you some favorites.

Damn Small Linux (DSL): I tried this first on the system, for a windows user this was baffeling to me. I would not reccomend it if you have no idea what you are doing, plus it just isn't that great to me.

Puppy Linux: This one I liked it is easy to use and for people coming from windows it looks similar and is easy to figure out. (AKA you don't need a degree from MIT to understand how to install something). While it is a little rough, considering what you have it is a real blessing for your old laptop. I tried it and it has been the best I have come across so far.

I hope that I have been able to help you in some way.

A.
