Which ISO image shall I download
Hi folks,
PC 32bit I haven't had Gentoo running and want to test it. Please advise which of them on following site; http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/where.xml is the latest version to download. TIA B.R. satimis |
O.K Statimis,
here are a few definitions I grabbed off the Gentoo Website Minimal Install CD: The Minimal Installation CD is called install-sparc64-minimal-2006.0.iso and takes up only 32 MB of diskspace. You can use this Installation CD to install Gentoo, but always with a working Internet connection only. Gentoo's Universal Installation CD The Universal Installation CD is called install-sparc64-universal-2006.0.iso and uses 287 MB. You can use this Installation CD to install Gentoo, and you can even use it to install Gentoo without a working internet connection, just in case you want to bring Gentoo to another PC than the one you are currently installing Gentoo on :) Package CDThis CD is not an Installation CD but an additional resource that can be exploited during a networkless installation. It contains prebuilt packages (also known as the GRP set) that allow you to easily and quickly install additional applications (such as OpenOffice.org, KDE, GNOME, ...) immediately after the networkless Gentoo installation. If you intend to use the Packages CD to quickly install additional software, make sure that you use the same subarchitecture as the stage3 tarball you use. Having said that I recomend you D/L Live CD as it seems to have an installer included in the Live CD, so it will create less hasles for you. Also it seems the Universal CD only supports Sparc64 CPUs (curse) here is another Link to the Live CD if the one on the site doesn't work. ftp://ftp.ussg.iu.edu/pub/linux/gent...ler-2006.0.iso Source: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handboo...?part=1&chap=2 hope this helps, Jake |
If you have an existing distro and want to install gentoo as a second Linux OS on another partition, you download nothing. You can simply proceed with the paritioning and stuff and install the gentoo kernel directly as mentioned in the handbook. You can do it in a chroot environment from your distro of choice. The installation CD is there only for convenience for those who don't have a working Linux environment.
The advantage is that you can do this from X and keep the browser open in one workspace while doing the installation in another. That way I made no mistakes and got gentoo up and running painlessly. |
Hi jacook,
Burning media - CD-RW Tks for your advice. Download "install-sparc64-universal-2006.0" from Gentoo website. Previously I thought it was a 64bits OS. I have been searching around for its md5sum file without result. $ md5sum Desktop/install-sparc64-universal-2006.0.iso Code:
dcb95748980827806b0be70c9d8dffeb Desktop/install-sparc64-universal-2006.0.iso liveCD root# without X-window started but failed to boot on 32bit PC. It looks to me very funny. B.R. satimis |
Ok I'm confused,
Are you trying to boot on a 64bit or 32bit machine? Gentoo is a PAIN, you cannot find ANYTHING on their site as far as I can tell go to the following Adress: http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml Choose a mirror from which to D/L, then you shouldx see somthing like this: http://gentoo.osuosl.org/ (emample) then click the "releases" folder, after this click on the folder of the archatechture you wish to D/L eg amd64 click on the folder marked "current" you will have Several options including a folder marked "install CD" click and and D/L the iso marked install-amd64-minimal-2006.0.iso or install-amd64-universal-2006.0.iso Nowe for the 32 bit Archatecture once you have choosen a Mirror from which to download click the folder marked "x86" after this click the folder marked "current", after this you have 2 options you will see two folders 1 marked "insstall CD" and the other "liveCD" pick one and D/L the corrasponding ISO for the Live CD D/L the iso marked livecd-i686-installer-2006.0.iso or fror the install CD for 32 bit download install-x86-minimal-2006.0.iso After this Burn it to CD and your set. I suggest you D/L from this site as I used this site to compile this example with and I know it works http://gentoo.osuosl.org/ Oh and the MD5 Sum should be in the file folder with the extention .DIGESTS click on it and you should see it really hope this Works out for you Jake |
I didnt care much for the live installer cd. The last couple times I have installed gentoo, I just used a knoppix live cd since I had one available. For you though, I would download the minimal installation cd (if you have a broadband connection). Then follow the handbook http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml The handbook itself discusses installation options and cd's

Uhh sparc64 is a *completely* different architecture from IA64 (intel) which is why your system won't boot.
