I brought Redhat 7.2 a couple of weeks ago to put on a Compaq 1692 laptop, amd k6-2 450MHz. I have kernel 2.4.7-10 or so it says but getting drivers for the modem even if they are exactly the same i.e lt_modem-2.4.7-10-6.00b14-1.i586.rpm they never work. I tried drivers for 586 386 athlon nothing works. Tried installing kernel source from cd and compiling my own rpm from driver source but nothing works just go around in circles. The modem is supported by the driver, have checked with lin modems.org. But it never works. Tried using fixscript utility to repair for kernel header flavor problems that works o.k. on lt_modem.o but no go for lt_serial.o.
A lot of the problems seem to be with the files in the 7.2 distro not being in the correct or traditional folders.
Does any one know which distro if any doesn't introduce too much of their own flavouring to the kernels and file systems.
HELP HELP
thanks in advance for any advise
Arthur.
You could always trying using Slackware. It's not bloatware like RH and some other( no offense to their creaters). You will have to compile your own winmodem support into the kernel
