Which Distro for Pentium MMX 166 64Mb 1,2Gb?

Iīve a Pentium MMX 166Mhz 64Mb 1,2Gb and I would like to use this computer with Linux.
Iīve tried:
Mandrake 9.1 : Fine but it works slowly and no space in HD.
Debian Woody: I donīt like its packageīs installation process and no space in HD. Slow too
SlackWare 9.0: I like it a lot. Space in HD without X Manager and it works respetably quickly.
Gentoo 1.4: I couldnīt compile the kernell totaly but I think the problem was the HDīs space. It seems a good choice for a better computer.

And now Iīm traying VectorLinux and SlackWare 8.1.

So, the idea for me is:

SlackWare 8.1/9.0 with XFCE/Fluxbox/BlackBox/Enligth

What do you think about it?

Could anyone make any suggestions?

Thanks a lot...

if you re-read what you typed, i would have to say you already answered your question, as you only really gave slack all the brownie points :D so i would say stay with slack...if you wanted the gui i would recommend fluxbox, which that will involve installing gnome packages since it is dependant on it..

I understand that the Gentoo store now offers install CDs with pre-built packages. Perhaps you should take another look at that, but more HD room to compile stuff would be very handy. It might/probably will be difficult to upgrade by compiling with no more HD room than that, though.

Another cheap hard drive so you would have a total of around 4 gig or so, and load it up with memory, it will do pretty good. I had a pentium mmx 200 MHZ box with 64 MB doing pretty good with gentoo and fluxbox running. Galeon (my GUI web browser of choice) was rather slow to launch, but other than that, I was impressed.

Have you tried the KNOPPIX Linux Live CD, a debian variant?

Moving to the Distribution Forum

I'd also say, yeah, slack should be good!

Cool

old thread, new post....
But for some updates.

I personally use DeLi linux on a piece of iron with same parametres.....then there is always DSL or Puppy....
But DeLi is my personal favourite.

(Even in 2008 A.D. MMX rules big)

My Experience.

I have an old Pentium mmx200 with 64Mb ram. Previously I had installed Debian 5 onto it using the net install CD, then manually installed Xorg, GDM and icewm. Worked OK but a little slow. Recently I have installed Vector Linux 6.0 light which defaults to an icewm desktop and am very impressed with it. Faster than the Deb install and works well with the low specs.
