Which Distro For Me

I am using an IBM T41 ThinkPad and I was just wondering if anyone uses a similar computer and would be able to tell me what distro I should use? I am currently using Fedora 4 and I cant get sound to work.

My main uses for the computer will be using an S-Video connection to show movies, burning CD's, watching DVD's, talking online (anything that comes with an 'all-in-one' so I dont have to go looking would be nice), and office related crap.

koricVI,

Mandrake would be your Best bet:

D/L it here:

http://frontal2.mandriva.com/en/downloads/mirrors

The reason I reccomend this Distro? because it has great detection should pick your H/W (including Sound card minimal of fuss, if any) + it is user friendly unclutterd and has A great Multimedia setup

Also guys, I am A man of few words if I say somthing will work it will work because I have read the post and assesed the situation as to what would be best. Why Must I explain if I can get the point accross easier with fewer words?

Jake

if everything works except sound currently, it would be a lot easier to just get your sound working. otherwise you are going to get around a dozen or so people like the previous post that just say use this distro and not give any reasons why or confirmation that their distro will work on that laptop out of the box.

Wow finlay thats funny I was about to reply to jacook and say "why" lol
(Although I have read alot on using T41 with linux and I think Mandrake is one that they commonly mention, but this was after I barely got used to Fedora)

Yeah, well the thing is when I go into the sound setup all it gives me is an option to play test sound and if you dont hear it it says 'auto detect failed, you will not have sound on your machine' ... and im like 'duh what are my options?' heh.

Anyway, I do think ill stick with this distro its just not having my music makes me wanna cry... even tho I dont know how to install anything that cna PLAY Mp3's... or Mpegs... or my OGG files, (its not that I can't find them I just dont know HOW! I either get errors, weird file types, or to many options t oknow what to download)

Uhm... perhaps I need a bit more direction than that, I opened terminal and typed it and it said 'command not found'
Sorry...

Edit Dont ask but all of the sudden I heard a sound, then I went into play test sound again and now my sound works... heh, thanks for the help tho

If you wanna explain that thing you asked me to do tho i need to learn all i can anyway... *feels like idiot*

in linux there is no specific extension for anything really.
since you are using fedora i would search for software on rpmfind.net
also since this specific question is 'resolved' you can create a new question in the fedora forum or the software forum, or the networking forum.
if you want to email me you can also do that
