I have an old box (P2, 233, 128MB, 40GB, ATI, WLAN) that I'm planning on turning into a "game server" of sorts in our breakroom. The premise is that we run S-Video out to our television, and hook up several gamepads via a USB hub. We'll put on emulators for some of the more popular consoles (NES, for instance), load up our ROMs, and play Super Tecmo Bowl until our eyes bug out. That's the plan, anyway.
Without thinking about it, I was going to just slap on Win2k Pro and go from there. Then I figured I'd at least toy with the idea of going with Linux instead. My question, then, is the typical "Which Distro?", but with the twist that this is specifically for a dedicated game console emulation box.
Btw, I'm still fairly new to the Linux scene. My only real exposure has been with Fedora, though I'm interested in using this as an opportunity to become a bit more knowledgeable.
Any distro will do. Just make sure to use a very light weight Window Manager as Flux/Blackbox, IceWM or something similar. If you run big guns as Gnome or KDE your system will crawl badly. If you really are willing to learn Linux, then you might even consider using Slackware or Debian. They are both arguably faster than Fedora and should give an extra boost for that machine, in my honest opinion...
