Yeah, little shortcoming on the education that OP received throughout the years I believe.

But to show that it can be done in a polite way:

1. I've used a lot of distro's over the years but mostly Debian for servers, never with a GUI though. Only recently started with Linux desktops, tried out DreamLinux, Puppy Linux, loving ThorsHammer (linus72 LQ user's baby), and currently on Slackware 13 which has me addicted for the time.

2. My main purpose for using Linux is the freedom it gives you, the ease (after some studying, reading, cursing, ...) of use and the fact that the community is (mostly) very friendly and helpfull.

3. Since I only started recently using Linux desktops (with GUI) I'm not much of a reference, but for the everyday work I started out with Ubuntu, now since one week switched to Slackware 13 and loving it. For servers I'd have to say Debian.

I hope that deserves a more friendly behaviour from the OP.

Since the questions are general and not specific, I feel that I'm not 'breaking' the LQ Rules in regards to homework. If our distinguished moderators think otherwise, then please let me know and I'll 'take my words back'. :D

Kind regards,

Eric

OK I am willing to help you out.

> 1. Which distros have ever used?
Fedora, Debian, Red Hat.
> 2. What is your purpose for using linux?
1. entertainment (playing, recording and sharing multimedia files).
2. web surfing
3. email
4. Hacking software source code, and developing my own
fixes and modifications which I do not share with anyone.
> 3. Which distro was the best for your purpose?
Fedora

1. distros tried: Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint (GNOME, KDE, and XFCE), openSUSE, Mandriva, Sabayon, PCLinuxOS, Arch, Slackware, FreeBSD (I know it's not linux), Kubuntu, Gentoo, Damn Small, Elive, Xubuntu, Slax, Dreamlinux, TinyMe, GoblinX, SAM, and maybe others...

2. purpose: initially: freedom, choice, alternative to MS monopoly; now: general desktop (internet, email, word processing, media)

3. best for me: Linux Mint KDE Community Edition -- free of installation issues, tools, and desktop features (though KDE4 is not perfect (yet), the Mint team has done an excellent job of implementing and integrating features

honorable mentions:
>openSUSE, Mandriva and Fedora: I should like to think that these are good distros, but I personally have had too many installation woes with each of them; but to be fair, I think it's my hardware

>PCLinuxOS: excellent distro, but still maintaining KDE3.5

>Elive: e17 is a wonderful alternative to GNOME and KDE, but the lack of any discernable release schedule, and sparce releases relegates it to the pet project arena, and not usuable desktop

1. Which distros have ever used?

In sort-of chronological order RedHat, Mandrake, SuSe, Debian, DSL, Knoppix, Mandriva, Fedora (Core), *buntu, Xandros.
Also SysRescCD, but only live. And (i don't know if you're counting them) Solaris and the three BSDs.

2. What is your purpose for using linux?
In general, it does what I want to do better than anything else I've tried.

3. Which distro was the best for your purpose?
Generally Debian. I use SystemRescueCD for rescuing systems and DSL for running ancient systems.
