I hate when people start this type of tread. All it leads to is distro bashing. LOL

I think just about any distro would do the job. But finding one small enough to download over 56k is gonna steer him away from the main-stream distro's.

look over at www.linuxiso.org they have some distros that are pretty small. Or over at http://www.linux.org/dist/english.html they have links to most of the distro's out there.

but hold on a sec! 2.4.18 will be offical in two weeks or so... gahh you'll be on an ANCIENT system then... the shame
1.) FreeBSD uses a kernel that comes with the OS and there isn't a need to update it like Linux needs (to add better NTFS support).

2.) My *MAIN* point was the filesize, but i did state the new kernel just as a added bonus. Find a distro this 56K modem friendly and i can see your point. Debian is still a minimum of 600MB becuase you need to burn at least the first cd, so there you have it...

ANCIENT system? ok, i don't have time now to think of some comebacks, gotta run!

haha. wimp. ok, so you're obviously too good for linux, so why don't you pick up your mountain of burnt iso cd's and go find a bsd forum, where you'll *REALLY* get ripped to shreds.

and why do you need to think of comebacks?? there's no need for comebacks, there's just a need for actual evidence and an effectively constructed viewpoint, neither of which have we ever seen any evidence of from you.

ok. seriously dude, what is your problem with me? i tried to give a perfectly *good* suggestion as to what the man needed/wanted in a distro...i did my research, EVEN TRIED THE THING BEFORE i said a word on this forum. I did not make anything up, i said it from my personal experiences. why am i not using peanut right now you say? well for my vast needs i expect something alittle more full featured. If i ran a server that would be MY distro of choice hands down. Debian is probably just as good but 50% of the installs on debian cause pain and suffering to the user which i dont like.

Now, i bet you havent even used Debian to say how good it is.

EVERYONE'S problem with you is that: you. don't. know. anything.

no, i've not used debian. that is why i don't comment on it. i don't talk about stuff i don't know about, and there are lots of things i don't know about. I just know that the amount i *do* know is vastly more than you.

i don't know much about bind, i don't talk about it.
i don't know much about NIS, i don't talk about it.
i don't know much about php, i don't talk about it.
you don't know much about anything, but you STILL keep pretending you do.

See, i've actually tried Debian and all the other distros i talk about here. Maybe i did make a few uninformative comments here and there when i first came to this forum but i don't anymore.

Wow, that was a very broad topic of you to "own". First of all you dont know what i know, i know many things you dont know (besides from linux/UNIX). So am i supposed to "praise" you or something that you know more about linux than me? yeah right.

ALRIGHT STOP !!

First off therion12, I have kept quiet and tried to keep my cool but you do post nonsense when you don't need to post. I see alot of your posts either posting nothing that is helpful and then occasionally sometimes somewhat helpful.
I have had many complaints about this from many members about you, I've been trying to be nice about letting them know by email your own opinions and such but its getting ridiculous now.

If you know the answer to some question, great.. if your not totally sure then skip it to the next, but stop all of this nonsense. I have noticed and tried to be nice when replying to some of your posts that didn't make sense or were totally wrong.

We welcome opinions here and your entitled to yours, but its not necessary everytime. If someone already got to a post and answered it with good advice, there is no need to back them up just wasting space saying, yep agreed in some ways, and I have seen you do that occasionally.

I am not trying to be mean or run you off this site, but this is a Linux related site as I can see you now love FreeBSD, that's great and all, we answer Linux questions and try our best at it to help out, but we don't want to give people the wrong answers.

Just stop the madness before something drastic happens. Most of these people are picking on you cause they seem to notice that most of your posts are non-sense and non-helpful in many different ways.

Thanks,

-trickykid

After you install Debian you can choose to "apt-get install" a specific "task", a task is a metapackage made up by real packages depending on each other, for example "apt-get install task-news-server" to automatically download install and interactively configure everything you could need to do the job. You can always fine tune or personalize every single installation...

Right now I'm running Sid (the "unstable" branch) and I've got the most recent software (kernel 2.4.17, gnome 1.4...) and it's working perfect!

Give it a try! It's power tends to keep away newbies, but it's worth trying a few installs!
