I learned a lot about how Linux work by installing Slackware. You are in control of your distro, and you can easily customise it to your needs. If you are looking for a minimal install, you can remove many packages, or install with a minimal window manager was window maker, which comes bundled.
With respect to dependencies, slackbuilds.org lists dependencies clearly, your other option is ~alienbob
Slackware current serves the role of a rolling release.
I prefer SysVinit, of Slackware, I find it easily customisable to my needs.
