Smile Which distribution should I use?

I am presently running Fedora 7 and have been told on several occasions that I should get a newer edition. My needs are really simple I do not download things like music or videos. I want a platform that runs Firefox, Thunderbird, Open Office as I have used them on Windows for years.

well if you like fedora, use fedora 17. Otherwise, grab Ubuntu or Mint.

Since you don't seem to like upgrading (Fedora 7 is really ancient) I would recommend not to go for distributions with a short support cycle, like Fedora or the non-LTS versions of Ubuntu or Mint. If you like RPM based distros give CentOS or Scientific Linux a try, if you want to try DEB based distros Debian or Ubuntu LTS may also be the right ones for you. If you don't care about the package format you can also try Slackware, it also has a rather long support cycle.

+1---especially this: http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major

Pick anything on this list---except maybe Arch.
