I'm wondering whichs CDs (ISO files) are needed to have a fully fonctionnal Mandrake 9 distro. There are 3 of them, the first one being called Mandrake90-cd1-inst.i586.iso (installation CD), the second one being Mandrake90-cd2-ext.i586.iso, and the third one is Mandrake90-cd3-i18n.i586.iso
Do I absolutly need the 3 of them or can I just get the first 2?
You absolutely need the first 1 and that's it. The other 2 are for more functionality. If you aren't interested in internationalization, you can pretty much skip 3, but I'd say at least go for the first 2.
Master C-- I am replying to you because you come off fairly confidant re: mandy 9 and I would like to post a question to you: how can I update my kermel (2.4.19-16 mdk) to the newest Cooker?
There are a couple of apps that I would like to be able to run that appear to require this bleeding-edge.
Then the relative path to hdlist is in the base directory, so:
../base/hdlist.cz
If you need to login/pass enter them there, however I doubt you need to.
Click OK
Now it will take a while, it's updating your list, nothing else. Once it's done, you can then close out of that screen with Save and Quit.
Open up:
Install Software
Click the button "All packages, alphabetical"
Then search for "kernel"
It should be your first choice (well actually it's 2.4.20.xx but it's bleeding edge).
You can install from HD, however I've never been in that situation to need to so I don't know how. There are plenty of threads regarding this, hopefully a search for you will help.
Where'd you get the files? Why were they in .rar format? I know what rar is, similar to a zip only better compression, but why'd you get that? Go to www.mandrake.com and head over to the download section. Find a mirror with the correct iso's and get em... The other option is to use what you've got and try booting up with a floppy and going the hd install route which is fine if it works, but like I said I've never had to do that, so good luck and YMMV.
I got the files from one of Mandrakelinux.com's mirrors. I too found it weird that they were in rar format, but I've looked at 3 of the mirrors, and all 3 had rar files.
I'll try to install from the HD and post the results then.
MasterC-- I followed your directions going through Mandrake Control Center in order to update my kernel to Cooker. BUT... I encountered an error and I'm hoping that you can help me around this..
After I enter the location of the ftp server under SoftwareSources Manager and click Add I get an error reading:
"Unable to update medium. Update will be cancelled."

Should I just point the Software Sources Manager to the ftp server and leave it at the main directory of the server, or should I point it into the appropriate sub dir?
An ftp server chosen at random off of the list provided my mandrakelinux.com is one that is located in Netherlands: 'ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Mandrake-devel/cooker'
this server has four (4) sub dirs that are as follows:
1- SRPMS
2- cooker
3- i586
4- ppc

If, in fact, I should point the Software Sources Manager to a specific sub dir on this server it would read as follows, correct.?.:
'ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Mandrake-devel/cooker/one of the above four (4) sub dirs
There should be a RPMS-cooker subdirectory...
If there is, point to that subdirectory, then you will also need to point to the hdlist in the ../base directory.
Forgive me, what is the entire command line dir listing that points to the hdlist on my machine?
The reason I ask is that it is still prompting me with the same error....i dunno. I'm thinking that this is the only other option in regards to a probematic field...
I didn't notice Winrar was the default application for ISO files, so I thought it was a rar archive. I decompressed it and tried to burn the files on the CD...I'll burn the ISO next time. ^__^
