whats the big deal? ATI driver & SuSE
 

Well, after seeing how many people have problems with their ATI cards and linux, I held off putting Linux on my main system because of the ATI card it held within. Normally a Gentoo-only user, I decided that I should test out my system(for compatibility with my card among other things) with a distro that doesnt take days to load:( So I tried out SuSE, pretty much the only one I havent tried except Debian.
So I decided that instead of installing the ATI drivers the normal way, e.g. RTFM, Id skip right to the first good guide I could find on LQ. Well, two hours later the prospects werent looking good for this PC and Linux. I decided before I gave up maybe I should "Read the freaking Manual". So I went to ATI's site and didnt think my chance's were too good after seeing the size of ATI's install guide. Nevertheless, I installed the rpm, built the modules, installed them, and ran fglrxconfig. Voila, everything works, and Im left wondering what the big deal is all about. Sure, its no install script like NVidia puts out, but they just put that out recently and I wouldnt exactly call what I did hard. For any new post regarding ATI support, please check out the real install guide, it worked for me.
ATI-Linux How-to
On a "linux-distrobutions" note, I did find SuSE quite slick. Im also really impressed how fast it runs considering it has no less than 30 more processes running than my Gentoo box. I guess I'll get used to KDE though.
