this question has been done too many times, i answered a similar one yesterday. let me direct you to the big blue search button in the upper left of the page.

there is no single best distro it depends what you want to do and why your changing. there are quite a few 'is linux for you?' websites out there i suggest you start reading/googling.

What you wanna to do with linux and what you know about linux.? Its not a simple OS..that you can change every day. You must study very and to know many to use Linux. And there is no good linux version..every one linux is good... Look or find all Linux OS install wver one on your laptop and see what will like to you....RedHat,Slackware,Mandrake,SuSe,Debian...;]~ Learn about them....

Try Knoppix on the cd first. If it detects all your hardware then you are lucky. Besides being cheap you do not have to go through the partitioning step.

This is a great site for question like this:

http://www.distrowatch.com/

At the end, it all get's down to personal taste. Call me conservative too, but avoid using chat language as "n00b asking 4 help" into a forum. On ICQ and Counter-Strike it's OK, but here, we have a search button and, nobody sane will make a search like this:

distro g00d 4 n00b

into the search button nor will we do it on google, making it unreadable.
Regards

i wanted a users opinion

which was why i directed you to the big blue search button, because as i said this has been discussed in the forum numerous times. there is no point continually repeating the same information.

Hmmm...the "Best Distro question" again. Its a matter of opinion. Everyone has their personal favorites. Best thing for you to do is download & install both of them and try them out. Go ahead and sample some of the other distros out there also. There are over 150 so you are bound to find something you may prefer/like.

I picked SuSe because I was told it had better pnp suppport and I was very worried about hardware conflicts with and OS that I didn't know. I didn't really like the yast updates very much and thought it ran just a little slow. Also I didn't think the system config was the best. Also I couldn't get my moniter or printer to set up properly (MAG moniter and HP and Lexmark Prnt) not like I have weird brands or anything. I wound up picking a generic moniter, my lexmark model number wasn't supported (Z35 very common) and my HP worked but only after getting the driver from HP the SuSe one would make the printer print but just a page of garbage. I'm not bashing it many people use and love it. I'm not sure maybe it was me and my linux inexperience at the time, but when I installed RH it autodetected everything and was ready to go I like the ease of the setup and very happy with it. I'd recomend RH or MDK for the transition from winbloze.

I second the suggestion to go to distrowatch.com and read up on all the different distros. They also have reviews written by users.

snatale1's post is a perfect example of why no one can recommend a distro for _you_. I'm using SuSE and haven't had any of the problems that snatale1 mentioned.

Knoppix is also an excellent idea for someone just starting out.

Wrong! Thats the problem here , very rarely does somebody recomend a distro they just pull the "do a search" "everybody asks that" "check out this web page" fine tell people that that is a common question and the answer is probally here but guess what when somebody is REALLY new from win looking at a distro review on a page written buy an experienced Linux user talking about all the new features, packages, software titles and other this is what it looks like to them to them #@%$^$%&$%^$#&%&^^$##^. All I said was the experience "I" had with SuSe. I was not blaming the distro I blamed it on my linux inexperience at the time and made that very clear. A newbie wants to find out everybodys experiences with distros good and bad THAT is the only way to make there desission. I'm not talking $hit to you but why does everybody forget what it's like to be the new guy?

I understand that many forget what is being a new guy. When I first started Linux I had no help at all. I've downloaded Winamp for Windows and tried to "double click" on it to install. Nothing happened and I've thought Linux was the worst OS ever because it was not installing Winamp. I wish somebody had pointed me to distrowatch before I've tried so many distros. Stingerpwns is half-way gone into the right direction, he found a good forum for asking questions Linux related, and he got the answers here, he was recommended to use the forum search and read some comments at some pages. God, I wish I had that help back when I've started. It's more then one question like his posted everyday, the options are:

1 - Do not reply to the same question. He should think the forum is bad, nobody answered him.

2 - Answer all post of all new guys (like what... 50 guys join the forum everyday???? Just a wild guess). So we should not move forward ever and waste bandwitch

Another popular questions is, how to install programs?. Shall we go after it over and over and over again or:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=45094

Or write everything again?. The best way learning how to do a pizza, is reading the recipe. If we ask mom or order a home delivered one, surely will be great, but you will never learn. Linux is pretty much about reading and I do, recommend a link where the user can come up with his own opinions ratter then re-start an unfinished (and never-ending) debate of this sort... Which Linux is the best, Redhat or Mandrake? What should I buy, Playstation or Xbox? Dark or Light beer? Nike or Reebok? Catholicism or Protestantism? Do you see where I'm going to? Not being mean or anything, but think about it
