i am looking for a good linux distro. i want something that is a live cd, somewhat small, and has good autodetection. i also want it to be easy to install to the hd. something where you can just choose a pre-formatted ext2 partition that exists (already on the hd) and install it. thanx, i am just looking for some reccomendations

Knoppix. P'bly the most established and complete LiveCD, hands-down.

SuSE 9.1, then. I tried it and loved it...got the full version installed now :-)

Edit: I'm not 100% sure you can install the livecd to the hard drive. But there is a 1-CD version of the OS, which is of course fully installable.

haven't a clue, I'd guess at least 700 megs, although it could p'bly hit 2gigs fully expanded with everything installed.

If your highest priority is that it is user friendly, I would suggest that you try out Ubuntu.

Hmmm...if you need it to fit inside of 1.4 gigs, I think whatever you do you're going to need to carefully select what packages you install. If you're not going to keep a separate partition for /home, I'd say leave yourself at least 40M for personal space, and work on squeezing the base distro inside of 1G.
If you don't have both (or either) of the big window managers, and you don't install packages that you don't particularly need (i.e. kernel-source, which is > 300M by itself), etc), you should be able to make it fairly easily.

Edit: Ever looked into Damn Small Linux? DSL really is the whole distro, in 50 megs or less. The main windowmanager is Fluxbox, so no futzing with the space-hogs that are Gnome and KDE. That would leave you plenty of room to install your own packages, i.e. Gaim, iPod software, whatever.
