if u mean kernel version e.g 2.4.26 then i like using 2.6.7 because its the latest and greatest. however if i was running old hardware the i would use 2.4.26.
the 2.5.x kernels are just development kernels i think ....
or if u mean distro then I just love how slackware 10.0 does what i tell it to do with bloated $%^& gui config tools. not to mention its quite fast and lean.

If you are referring to the kernel I have not used the 2.6 kernel yet so I cannot commment
as for what is best for beginners theres probably not much difference.
