Yu could dbl clk on this file and a small dial up window similar to ftp prog came up and began to download linux distro. But thats in the past.

the easiest way to do this is to d/l the iso cd images and burn them (if you've got a cd burner). you can get those from many sites like http://www.mandrake.org/ or the mirrors. or you can order mandrake cd's for cheap (just shipping, i think) from the website, too. check this website for other options.

i'm not sure what it is you're getting at, but if you have a cd-burner, download these:

http://www.linuxiso.org/download/mdk-8.1-1.iso
http://www.linuxiso.org/download/mdk-8.1-2.iso
http://www.linuxiso.org/download/mdk-8.1-3.iso

Cool

I think we are getting somewhere.

All i just do is download these and then burn them to a cd and then thats it.

Dont I need a boot disk or root disk or is the iso images burned to the cd bootable?

Thanks alot

the first cd is bootable yes. if your BIOS supports bootable cd's then you're all set. boot off disk 1 go!
http://www.linuxiso.org/mandrake.html will tell you what each of the 3 cd are...

Thanks for all your help!

I suppose it would be a problem if I downloaded the images to a compaq laptop w/ no cdrom drive huh?

Or is there a way around this?

well, you could copy them to another computer (one with a burner) over a network. if you are going to install linux onto a pc without a cdrom, that's another matter. most distributions have ftp install option or you can d/l the files. i don't know about mdk, but redhat (for example) has boot disks that you can download that to the ftp install over the internet (not advisable with dialup internet).

any mdk experts that can help us out here?

mandrake update

:smash: I seem to recall that there was a way to update mandrake from a website within Mandrake. I can not find the specific tools needed to do that though. I also do not know if there is a specific version to work from.

I know that apt-get on debian will do this, however that's a different distro.
