what to download
 
im a total newbie
is there a distribution in only one file which i can download

Yes. Go to www.linuxiso.org - you download an iso file and, in the process of being burned, it expands into many files and fills the disk.

Before you actually install Linux, you might want to burn something called a live evaluation version. By going to www.linuxiso.org, you will find a button called Knoppix. Click on that, download the ISO, burn it, and put it into your CD drive and restart your computer. It will boot up a working Linux system off of the CD and it won't touch your hard drive. This is the best choice to see if you like Linux.

or you could even try ZipSlack. Its a version of Slackware that gets installed on a windows partition. It has the same basic functionality of linux, but it's in your windows partition. www.slackware.com for more info
