what ftp do/can i connect to to download linux?

Well linuxiso.org has a script which tries to connect you to the fastest ftp mirror for the distro you are attempting to download. One of the fastest mirrors I can think of is ibiblio @ ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/
