What distro in your opinion has the best apps?

What distro in your opinion has the best applications and why? Like as in the biggest selection of text, graphics and sound editors, games, networking and INTERNET, etc.
I personally think Knoppix3.9 has more apps built in than any other distro, of course i have not tried them all;) .
I'm just interested in your opinions.

How about Debian? I have over 22k packages available via apt-get install. And that isn't even counting apps you can find in places like freshmeat.net, and SourceForge.net.

Knoppix, MEPIS, Ubuntu, Xandros are all Debian based so they have the same apps available by adding more repositories to the source.list. "Unofficial APT repositories"

Of course the RPM based distros have the RPM repository on rpmfind.net, Easy Urpmi and probably others that I don't know about.

If you are talking about a LIVECD I think Kanotix comes with more apps than Knoppix.

Are you talking about number of apps 'out of the box' or after installing them? Because if it's after installing the apps, all are pretty much equal.

ctkroeker 06-04-2005 01:00 PM

I meant to say "Out of the Box", but after installing aswell.
Sorry, forgot to put Debian on the list, I new something was missing.

well gentoo can do anything from source, and everything has source so wins hands down.
Then again for "out of the box" you get a kernel...

From your list, all of them except Kubuntu/Ubuntu ship with a decent amount of packages in my personal opinion.

I think that SUSE 9.3 has a good amount of applications as standard, especially with the DVD install! With the Guru and Packman repositories, I'm sure you can find everything you need!
