What distro has excellent AMD PowerXpress support?
 

I have a laptop with an AMD 6630M/Sandy Bridge hybrid GPU. I've struggled in Ubuntu to get fglrx installed. It would run on the discrete card in 12.10, and wouldn't work at all in 13.04.

I'm wondering, are there any distros which have good out-of-the-box support for the latest AMD drivers, particularly new enough drivers to support powerXpress? I suspect this will rely heavily on which version of X11 is being used.

As far as I can tell, fglrx 13.3 Beta should support my hardware, if I can get it correctly installed on a distro.

If you need newer drivers, you could look around for PPAs in ubuntu that have them, but if you don't mind switching distros, I'd say go with a rolling-release one. Those tend to adopt upstream changes a lot quicker than versioned distros like Ubuntu and Fedora.
I'd recommend Arch Linux because they are very up to date, don't do a lot of patching, and have excellent documentation. They have this very detailed wiki page on AMD drivers. Even if you don't want to use Arch, you might be able to find some useful information on that page.

Oh, you said "out of the box". Don't know about that one. Maybe ArchBang? It's very up to date as well, but requires a whole lot less setting up than regular ol' Arch.

No need to be sorry, Arch was definitely one I've been looking at. Looks like they don't officially support fglrx from the page you linked to, but I might still at least try it out and see if I can get it working.

Seeing as how you'd be installing unoffical packages if you used Arch, I highly recommend getting 'yaourt'.
It takes the same options as 'pacman' (the Arch Linux package management system), but takes additional options to allow the downloading packages from the AUR, which is the place where "unoffical" package reside. It should make installing drivers from the unoffical repository much easier.
