dear buddies,

we released yesterday the epidemic gnu linux (in english version)a Debian-based Brazilian distribution for the desktop, including the script smxi/sgx already pre installed. As I said to h2 (the smxi developer) in the past I was translating to the english one brazilian distro called epidemic gnu linux which I'm one of the devlopers and we included the script smxi/sgxi pre installed on it in order to facilitate to the users. Besides, a lot of conveniences for the final users. Thus, I would like this fantastic community try it and whoever can downlod it. the download links are available there at http://www.epidemiclinux.org/ and . We announced the release at the distrowatch. com and you can view at http://distrowatch.com but I quoted it down there below as follows:

What branch of Debian is Epidemic based on?.
What architectures does Epidemic run on? i386,amd64?.
As an existing Debian user,what can Epidemic offer me that Debian can't?.

The epidemic is a debian lenny and the architecture is i686. The epidemic is a distro intended for the final user and totally optimized by using a tool called "easylife" that you can install a lot of softwares which if you use the pure debian you should install manually and for the "nobos" it's a kind of headache. Another good point is a "rolling realease distro" because It's included the script smxi/sxgxi pre installed. Besides, Now, we're starting up an epidemic gnu linux english support at http://sidux-underground.com/smf/index.php at the forum "underground sidux" with the buddy "trash80" (the sidux underground administrator) who is going support you if you'll need some prompt help. He set aside a part of the forums for English support called "Epidemic GNU/Linux - Support Area -English Support for Epidemic GNU/Linux ". Enjoy it and report any trouble there. the nobos won't be without support anylonger. for the while being, we don't have an english support forum yet. But in time to come we are going to give you an english home page at the epidemic gnu linux main page.

just a couple notes you should provide to newbies wh wanna use/install Epidemic

1) Most folks dont know that the ext4 filesystem by default makes a /boot partition
(this is correct yes?)

2) Most folks aren't familiar with Grub2; are you going to provide trouble-shooting docs
for those who dont know how to use grub2?

3) what are the default passwords for root and user?
or, is it both a livecd and install cd?

4) is it 100% Lenny?
no backports, etc?

5) is flash available or must the end user enable/add backports to get flash?

Thanks for the questions. The replies are as follows:


1)No. Ext4 is just a file system, an evolution of Ext3. It does not create a partition by default. You have to choose one of them.

2) Unfortunately, we didn't have time to prepare the english forum with all the details yet. Information about the use of grub2 has already being explained in the forum Epidemic at http://www.epidemiclinux.org and in the future will be also included in our wiki at http://www.epidemiclinux.org/wiki) . We've just started up the epidemic english forum at http://sidux-underground.com/smf/index.php?topic=157.0

3) The Epidemic is both a LiveDVD and an install DVD. The password there and the root powers are granted automatically by “Esu” (one of the applications developed by the Epidemic team), whenever they're necessary. But when the Epidemic is installed the first time, now It requires the root password specified during the installation of the system, that you choose by yourself.

4) It is based on Debian Testing which is currently the squeeze.

5) The flash can be installed with a single click with the “Easy Channel”, an application developed by the team of Epidemic to make the life easier for new Linux users. This Epidemec makes a differences.

But pay attention this version is a beta 2 and all bugs must be reported at the the epidemic english support forum.

Besides, be aware about important information for bugs, correctios and new versions. In the near future we're going to furnish a much better version.
