Want e17 to work...with wireless card [SOLVED]

In order to get my atheros based wifi card working I need madwifi...in order to get madwifi working I need kernel sources. Everything I see are old and unhelpful posts on elive forums. Has anyone here managed to get this distro working with a wireless card?..and HOW?

On a side note, since my desire is to have e17 up and running (don't care which distro) I tried following the forums on ubuntu's website on installing e17 from elive repositories. All a no go. Those posts are ancient and again, unhelpful.

I think my best chance is to upgrade the kernel in elive but I really don't care how I go about getting this done. I just want it done. Any ideas would be appreciated. TIA everyone. :)

I just installed kernel package and stock kernel (2.6.12 with elive 4.0) and recompiled no problem - standard debian procedure worked ok .Then used networks configuration utility in elive panel. I agree docs and forums not the best for elive but worth the trouble - looks great and works a treat now.

I am just venturing into compiling kernels (first one was about a week ago). What was the command to get the kernel package?...and was that the kernel that it came with or did you grab it from kernel.org?

Follow this if you like and just amend kernel version - http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21 , used 2.6.12 because uname -r gave that as kernel, someone on forums has used 2.6.15 with no problems. Got kernel from kernel.org - good luck

No dice. I compiled the kernel and according to that guide and it didn't work properly. I will try again but it will have to wait until next weekend. If there is a better guide could you point me to it, please?

Is there no other way to get wireless working other than to install the kernel? I have seen some posts mention using apt-get to install the sources. How exactly is this done?

Use synaptic and there is linux-source and linux-image for 2.6.15

Ok. I got it running but I didn't install the kernel source. Instead, I was actually able to install madwifi via synaptic which allowed me to get my atheros based wireless card working. Additionally, for those who need ndiswrapper you can do the same thing (get ndiswrapper via synaptic). In other words, there is no need to install the kernel source. Thank you for your help beagle2. :)
