Very small Linux distro?

Hi,

I am using Gentoo on a little single board computer I'm playing around with. I've decided to switch to using Disk On Chip as opposed to a hard disk, but my max is something like 114 MB, so Gentoo is way too huge. Are there any other distros out there that will fit on something this small?

I've seen Tiny Linux at http://tiny.seul.org/en/ and it seems like it would do the job, but its rather old (based on Slack 4).

There is also Snap Gear Linux at http://www.snapgear.org/snapgear/about.html which is aimed at serious embedded users.

I've also seen Damn Small Linux but to do a disk install of it the documentation says you need 200-300 MB.

Do I have any other options besides these? I appreciate any suggestions! :)

There are a pile of distros that will fit in that amount of space. Run a search at distrowatch and be amazed.

muLinux. Do a search for that. The floppy disk version, with all packages, is like 30MB or so (still has X and all). The CD version is a 300MB ISO...but that's the old ISO. There's a new one that's like 80MB.

It's kinda old though...XFre86 3.3, kernel 2.0.36....but it works.

Why are you NOT using an embeded distro?

I've looked through all the descriptions at distrowatch.com and the only one that really seemed like an embedded distro was Snap Gear. Are there other 'true' embedded distros?

Damn Small Linux would be a fine choice for a small embedded system. Simply use the frugal install option which simply copies the compressed files from the cd and sets up lilo. Installed that way it only uses about 50 megs, which would leave you more than 60 megs for the myDSL extensions, such as FireFox.

The quick way, though, is to boot from the LiveCD and then right click to bring up the menu and choose Apps | Tools | Frugal Install, and then follow the instructions.

Unless you build your own with an older kernel, and just the programs you need, i dont think youll get much smaller.
