upgrading debian potato to woody
Hallo all

I'm having a hard time upgrading my potato install to woody. The problem comes in with some sub-system of dpkg that crashes or loses it's state info or something:

dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 2263 package `rstart':
missing version
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

Any ideas? Any help welcome.

Hmmmm... Sounds to me like on of them depian package manager errors. I never used Debian, and never used dpkg (Debian's package manager) either... so I suggest you poke around. Check out /var/lib/dpkg/status, maybe it's a corrupted package database? Read the manpages/HOWTOs, if you already haven't done so.

Sorry for not being able to provide real help... :(

Yep, it screwed up badly. Here is the appropriate section from the status file:

Package: rstart
Status: purge ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: x11

a "apt-get remove rstart" confirmed that it was in fact, not installed. so just changed to whole thing to

Package: rstart
Status: purge ok not-installed
Priority: optional
Section: x11

and retried "apt-get dist-upgrade" and off I went once more. Thanks for the help - it pushed me in the right direction.
