upgrade debian woody??

I just installed debian woody and it seems like all the packages are old as hell and even when I use apt-get it gets old packages - is this normal? If not, then how can I get all the new packages?
I mean, I am using gnome 1.4! lol

Yes, it is normal as Debian only include stable packages in their apt sources. If you want to use newer software you'll need to find an apt source which serves it. For example if you want to download the newest version of KDE there is an apt source listed on their site.

I'm sure if you use a search engine you'll find a source for the latest (ish) version of Gnome.

if you open /etc/apt/sources.list you should see lines which contain a url followed by something like "unstable/non-US main contrib"
the last part of the line defines which group of packages will be downloaded from that site. if you change "stable" to "testing" you'll get newer packages. the debian system has stable which is pretty well guaranteed not to fail, testing is pretty reasonable, and unstable, which a lot of people use without problems.
