updating kernel and distribution

I would like to know how to update the kernel to 2.4, i have RH7,0 the last time i try it failed and i don,t know why... i would like to try again with a step by step if possible.
Upgrading the distribution to 7,1 would be also welcome.

thank you

What exactly happened?
RH7.0 had a dysfunctional gcc so "make" didn't work. is that your problem???

When you compile, you use make. As I say RH7.0 had a duff version. You can't upgrade kernel unless you update GCC first.

GCC is a compiler needed in compiling C Code, I guess that is how I would define it in a nutshell.
