Hey,
Has anyone who has worked on Ubuntu Linux tell me how good is it.

Hey,
I am a student so all i do is surfin the net and programming........was wondering whether its suitable from programming point of view. Does it hav all the packages etc.

may be it will be helpful for you.
I couldn't get it going.

its based on debian so when u install it u could use the command apt-get install <any program> or use its gui synaptic

It's fairly nice and stable. If you want stable stable well tested, then debian woody might suit you better.
