Trying To Pick Distro's That Will Work W/My New Hardware

I'm a great bit new to the Linux Scene and I wanted to give Ubuntu a try but it seems that I have a few hardware issues I can't get past.

The top two being:
1. Xserver dosn't detect my screen / vid card (I'm using a LCM-19v7 LCD and a Nvidia 8800GTS)
2. My Onboard (Mobo) Ethernet won't work (I've tried both dhcp/manuall configurations) (I'm Using the EVGA 122-CK-NF68-AR LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel MOBO)

I can get into graphical mode (sorta) via changing x to run with vesa instead of what it defaults too: nv. HOwever, it's choppy sluggish and the second I try anything like switching screens it will crash.

If anyone has tips or suggestions please let me know.

I did try the Gentoo live cd and it booted to x and detected my internet connection without issue but Gentoo is a bit advanced for my tastes.

Thanks!

I think, I hope that most any distro would run that MOBO. The reason I hope so is that I have an identical still sitting in the box here waiting for me to afford the peripheral hardware. Rather than tell you just to try some distros which would be my first inclination, I'll see if anybody verifies that it's not a big deal.

Yeah I can't get past the network connection issue to try and fix the video issue via new installs, drivers, etc.

I have to do everything command line based atm (not relly a big deal.. almost prefer using nano than the graphical network tool)

But for the life of me I can't figure out why Ubuntu refuses to connect to my router (it seems)...

My /etc/network/interfaces files is:
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static (Yes i've tried dhcp with[out] the below)
address 192.168.1.108
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1

and my resolv.conf files is something like
search <name>
nameserver <ip>
nameserver <ip>

I a'm almost 100% certian they are correct as using the live gentoo cd, and windows, I can confirm that the same files have the same setup info

If anyone out there has any info on the distros, and/or this issue it would be much appreciated....

I may move this thread to the hardware section i think... It's kindof turning into a debug disscussion.

Thanks Agian

I have the same mobo the network issue should be solved with a bios update. see here
http://www.evga.com/community/messag...TOPIC_ID=22678
That should allow you to get the LAN up and running to get the bios update

I have Fedora Core 6 (x86_64)up and running beautifully on this mobo without a hitch.
