Trial of the Distos

Now, after about 2 months total using Linux, I can say I've learned the basics. Mandrake helped me through this trying time, as I know it is the most probably "newbie friendly" distro. But, I think I may Tri-boot another distro with my Mandrake / XP Pro setup. I have tried Red Hat 7.1 before, but at that time I was just courious to what Linux was and how it functioned. Now, I'm a bit more serious.

Basically, I use my PC for several things:

Media - I constantly play MP3's and watch movies. I dont see this being a factor to rule out any single distrobution, as I should be able to have XMMS and Mplayer installed on each

Networking - mmm how I love LAN parties. I cant get enough of it. Actually, I believe the first reason I even tried Linux was to say to all my buds, "HEY GUYS, IM USING THE BEST OS, AND U ARE ON WINBLOWS", hehe. But, all we would use was a standard TCP/IP network which I had set up (192.168.0.###). I was wondering, which is the best distro for the fastest networking capibilities? And I'm not talking basic, I also have Firewire, USB 2.0, and Gigabit Ethernet installed.

Games - Nothing better then a nice game of Q3 right? ;). To be honest, I haven't experimented much with games on Linux. I wish I would have tried to learn more, but between trying to understand everything else, playing games wasn't my first priority. Which distro would be the best for gaming?

Well, I hope I didn't ramble on too much here, as I tried to keep this post as formal as possible... and please remember, I'm not just looking for a single answer here, I'm looking for some actual discussion on which would be the best distrobution out there to use. Thanks in advance!

As a result of much testing, I can tell you Linux networking (TCP/IP Stack) is much faster than Windows (NT/W2K). I have a "book" of Windows registry tweaks required to get improved TCP/IP performance out on any M$ machine. The list for Linux is empty...
