Smile Totally New .. Red Hat

Dear Friends,

I am a new member of this forum, a good user of many OS but
totally new to Linux. But once I am in the track I assure you that
will be an active member in search of NEW .. NEW

My familiarity to Linux is only that I have installed Red Hat Linux 8
after formatting my system. The general appearance and the advantages heard about Linux give me a too much interest and enthusiasm to know more about Red Hat Linux.

Following are my some doubts, findings and hope that it will be an answer to many new Linux uses.

1. Had 3 cd's for installation ( 2nd cd is asked during installation)
but no idea about third. When 3rd cd is inserted the CD icon appeared on desktop (good one) and saw many packages (is it called packages instead of programs, is .rpm is equivalent of .exe)

Installed many packages but couldn't find anything in the menu

2. Which program can serve me the same purpose of Media player.

3. How can I open a floppy. (found the method to format)

4. Is the home given is similar to My computer, but couldn't find
floppy, cd etc.

5. How the drives are named, is it hda1,hda2 etc instead of
C,D etc.

Please help me with the most simple things.

Thanking you advance
George

1. With RPMs you can easily install and delete data on your system. Its not exactly like an *.exe . But for if you just switched to Linux compare it with an *.exe. (Some people are going to hit me...) I guess you installed just libaries no applications that why you don't have them in the menu. (Like *.dll in W$)

2. xmms for audio, xmms or mplayer for video.

3./5. In Linux/Unix the filesystem is a tree with / as the root folder. Everything else is mounted (means connected) to /.
mount /mnt/floppy will mount your floppy data in the folder /mnt/floppy. Before removing your floppy you have to umount /mnt/floppy. This is important!

4. Hmm you haven't heard about permissions yet, don't you?

Read a book about basic Linux Administration or check th web. Linux is rather different than Windows, but you learn.
Here are some good links:

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/ using redhat
http://www.rpm.org/max-rpm/ using rpm

Hi aspstg

Linux sees IDE drives like this:

/dev/hda - - - - - drive on primary master channel
/dev/hdb - - - - - drive on primary slave channel
/dev/hdc - - - - - drive on secondary master channel
/dev/hdd - - - - - drive on secondary slave channel

Linux sees Partitions on IDE drives like

/dev/hda1 - - - - - 1st partition on the primary Master drive

/dev/hdb3 - - - - - - 3rd partition on the primary Slave drive

The Home directory /home is where you keep all your User accounts.

Dear Bill,Skyline,

Thanks for the help, finally solved all the five doubts.
Now I feel comfortable with Red Hat

Mount and unmount is pretty clear.
A Right click on the desktop lead me to the right way,
and when floppy was opened the terminal had mnt/floppy

Kindly give me a general idea about some common softwares
( Entertainment and useful) to be installed like mplayer

Thanking you
George
