I want to see any ideas about the fastest linux distribution that can be run on this notebook.
I've found PCLinuxOS 0.93 Big Daddy to be exceptionally fast on older hardware. I installed it on a friend's Celeron 533 with 192MB RAM, and much to my surprise it works quite well. It uses KDE.

You need a toram or copy2ram distro. There are lots around these days. One day all operating systems will run from RAM.

I would recommend:
Puppy Linux
Slax
Scientific Linux

I've been a long-time user of Mandrake on my "nomade" laptop (see signature), but I found it to be slow. For this machine, I changed for Debian. In my opinion, I lost some user-friendliness, and Debian is dead-slow to boot compared to Mandrake, but Debian is way faster at runtime. If that's any help to you…

In terms of being fast, I have to say Slax and Puppy are the best, but they aren't very powerful. If you mean you want a distro thats both fast and powerful, then Gentoo and arch linux are way to go, if you have time to set them up.

Hi

Run Arch+fluxbox, or Arch+IceWM, or Crux instead of Arch, and you will se how fast is fast...

5 seconds boot time with Arch with qinit, and a HDD, no SSD... with an SDD it could possibly boot in 3s...

Now, Debian and Sabayon users... take THAT ... Lulzzz

Please don't drag up dead threads. There was no need to comment a 2 year idle, 3 yr old thread.

I am not really convinced Arch is that much faster. Just the way the system is installed, means that you don't end up too much unnecessary apps.

Here's a speed comparison although not very helpful as the comparison has different kernels, etc.

Debian Squeeze with a Fluxbox desktop instead of KDE or GNOME works like a charm in any aspect stability, rapidity, diversity and so one.

I have an old IBM Thinkpad, 233mhz & 96mb of ram and put a Debian Netinst with Fluxbox on it. Overall it's pretty fast, but depends on some apps may slow down. Good thing with a minimum install is you don't get stuff you don't want/need.

As acid_kewpie pointed out, this thread had been dead for 2 years. The OP has, I'm sure, long since made his decision, and probably gotten rid of that hardware by now.

exactly my point. it also depends on how your kernel suits your hardware. the better the integration the faster.

I would definitely say that "Lucid Puppy" is a very good way to go if you want fast. Despite it being based on Ubuntu, it is trimmed down so much that (1) it boots in even fewer seconds than modern Ubuntu and (2) launches applications faster than GNOME (I believe it uses Xfce (LXDE?) for a GUI).
