I used openSUSE, and i think that i may say me hardware is very good recognized... Even for computers with the intel core duo " Like the Mac " and ATI drivers, and wireless is no problem.
Also Mandriva and (K)Ubuntu are me favorites.
For the daily use in the Art studio i have one p.c. running Kubuntu and one with openSUSE 11.0 and the Mac OS X Tiger.
Greetings
I would have to go with Ubuntu. I liked the "feel" of PCLinuxOS, but unfortunately it ran incredibly slow on two high end workstations.
Even after tweaking, it ran slow. After struggling for almost a week, i went back to Ubuntu.

The Gnome-Desktop of Mandriva and also openSUSE are working fast, Ubuntu also, but in the startup it often " freezing " And I must always do a restart. Have not find the problem at the moment.
Greetings,
Artfreddy
I used Kubuntu and Mandriva One. I had trouble with Kubuntu because it didn't have Flash installed so I couldn't use Linksys' tech help site well. I tried Mandriva One and BAM! It worked like a charm with Firefox as the browser. I went right to Youtube and could watch videos. It gets my vote. Then again Mandrake/Mandriva have always been one of the best and most complete Linux distros out there.

You can install Flash in about 5sec on the Live CD.
Regardless, there's a lot of good live CD's out there for hardware recognition. Almost all of which have been mentioned in this thread. I like Ubuntu, because I'm used to a Debian system, Knoppix is also good. I don't see it on your list and I've not used it in ages, but Sabayon used to have a very complete Live DVD.

Really? I didn't notice that at all. I thought boot times were maybe a little slow, but I'm used the <30 second boot times of arch. but it was nothing excessive, and in fact booted faster than any version of knoppix i've used. I liked it so much i installed it on a spare computer i have sitting around for testing purposes. it seems to run fine on that, a 1.9mhz duron machine with 384mb ram.
