Terminal only based distribution?

Hello,

Would you know and may eventually recommend any good terminal only based "Live" Distro (live distro based on a Terminal only)? (with gcc, ncurses).

There was few for hacking live cdroms with only a terminal. There was also debian live rescue cdrom.
Maybe there are some more.

Pure terminal without X11 installed for modern PC x86, 686,... (>3.x kernel).

In general any distribution can be installed without a desktop or can be turned off so pick the one your most comfortable using? What do you mean by >3.x kernel?

Most any distro can be installed as server/terminal-only, so take your pick: Ubuntu, Slackware, CentOS, Debian, etc.

If you have a favorite distro that you are already familiar with, why not use that one?

Or, if you are looking for something more geeky/niche/non-mainstream, check out the "nox" releases from LinuxBBQ.

"Live" Distro based on a Terminal only, which are maintained. I improved the post.

In addition to my excellent suggestions above, I'll also point out that you can get a full-screen terminal on just about any live distro by toggling through the virtual consoles with Ctrl+Alt+F1, Ctrl+Alt+F2, etc. so you can run whatever live DVD/USB of Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, etc. you have lying around.

You haven't said WHY you need this, so I am just taking shots in the dark with these suggestions.

The Anaconda installer for CentOS is useless since you can't set up LVMs without the graphical tool. The system can run text-only after installation, though.

iirc ('s been a while) the archlinux install medium also boots into a live cli environment.

I think all of the linux distros should work without GUI, it depends on the boot, the runlevel. So actually you only need to use the one which will not run X. (it may depend on the distro and also I do not know all the distros therefore I cannot be really sure about that)
