Well ive been pretty happy with suse except for one thing. When i update my system and it does a kernel update my comp eats itself. I update nd reboot to activate new kernel, everytime i do it i get error 23, error while parsing numbers. I was recommended to ubuntu by another user. I recently got into kde so ive been thinking about switching to kubuntu. im not an experienced linux user so i wanted something similar to suse with a good support. plus i noticed suse compix xgl nd beryl repository dosent work now. So ive been reading on kubuntu edgy nd ive been hearing great reviews. stability nd good for eye candy like berl + aiglx. what i look for in an operating system is stability eyecandy nice workflow nd a decent speed which i dont worry about that much cuz im running a pretty disel pc. Another thing i just noticed is that kubuntu has alternative cds, nd some of those features are needed for me, for instance im running Sata Raid harddrives and i mite need the alternate disk, but does just the 1 give me what the desktop disk gives me? im confused. This is all on one dvd with suse which i really like.
I just wanted an opinion from the community before i probably switch. thanks in advance
Suse 10.2 is better, stick with it. A lot of Ubuntu has been switch to suse 10.2 recently. You can configure yast to ignore kernel updates if you don't want those.
I agree that the problem you are seeing is not worth changing distributions. Besides, kernel updates are relatively rare events.
Let me add, since you asked, information regarding the "alternate install" CDs for Kubuntu and its *ubuntu brethren. The alternate install just uses a different installer. It is a text-based installer with text-based "graphics," but is a great deal more effective for anything that is not a generic, vanilla installation on a mainstream machine. When you are done with the install, the distribution will look and behave the same regardless of the installer used (assuming, of course, that you choose the same options for the different installation types).
