SuSe Major Installation Problem

I have major problem with suse. I have download the entire ftp tree onto an external USB hdd since i have an adsl connection. The installation progresses normally until tha part where you have to choose the partition where the directory is located, my Windows partition (hda1) isn't shown here, however another partition on my first disk is shown (hda2), since the directory was on a different partition (sda1), i selected it and continued normally. There was an error in mounting hda2 to /windows/c but i ignored it and continued. When installing the packages, i got 7 package rrors, these were:
python_doc_pdf
povray
recode
scilab
Source_Navigator
qt3-devel-tools
k3b

I chose to ignore these since they weren't critical and then rebooted after the install was complete. Upon reboot and after selecting linux from Grub (I'm dual-booting) i got into a black screen with tux at the top and scrolling messages, this froze for a while on hotplugging then continued until the screen turns black to initialise the X login screen. Here everything froze and my mouse pointer got stuck in the middle of the screen as a watch. I could enter a small menu after pressing Alt plus a F* key I couldn't understand any of the choices there. My hardware setup is:

Processor: Pentium 4, 2.40 ghz
Memory: 256MB SDRAM
Hard Drive: 40GB ATA HDD, 40GB USB Maxtor HDD
Modem: Askey HSFi V.90(V.92) 56K PCI Modem, Alcatel Speedtouch ADSL USB Modem
CD-RW Drive: Atapi 40xWrite/12xReWrite/40xRead
Graphics: GeForce4 Mx 440 64mb ram
USB Ports: 2 + 2 USB 2.0
Pointing Device: Acer PS/2 Easy Internet keyboard, Acer USB Wheelmouse
Audio: Avance AC-97
Monitor: 17" Acer Monitor [AC711]
Other Disk Drives: 1.44' Floppy Disk Drive, Multimedia Card Drive, SD card Drive, Memory Stick Drive.
Other Ports: 1 Firewire Port

Hope someone can help me.

EDIT- i'm trying to install Suse 8.2
EDIT2 - When choosing seperate packages I get an error about jre1.3xx not found and that openoffice needs it.

I would guess that you have not configured X Windows yet. If that is true then youcould fix it with the following:

boot
When you get to " everything froze and my mouse pointer got stuck in the middle of the screen as a watch". Then enter:
<ctrl> <alt> <F3>
This should give you a login prompt.
Login as root.
Run the SuSE program called SaX2 by entering:
sax2

SaX2 will then lead you through configuring X Window.

I would say that the packages are not the problem...I would agree with the sax2 option that jailbait suggested. The same thing happend to me the first time I installed SuSE.

By the way, if you have bought SuSE 8.x, you have access to install support...they were the ones that showed me the sax2 procedure.
