Exclamation SuSe install hangs very early

ok here's what I did:

I downloaded the suse 9.0 boot iso (ftp://ftp.oregonstate.edu/pub/suse/s.../boot/boot.iso)

I booted off the cd and it started SuSe setup. I selected "install" and it loaded the higher res graphics support but then it hung. I reset (ctrl-alt-delete didn't respond), and I did the same thing again, with the addition of pressing F2 for verbose mode. It hangs after printing the message "detecting hardware".

any idea why? has this ever happened to you? what should I do?
