Suse 9.1 + RAID, is it possible?

I tried very long to install Suse 9.1 with PROMISE FASTTRAK RAID.
PROMISE does NOT supply Suse 9.1 drivers, only 9.0 drivers. They did not help, not compatible I guess.

I got to install the complete Suse 9.1 onto the RAID ARRAY, and then when I boot from bootloader, it just wont load the kernel 2.6.x.

Suse 9.1 also told me when I was installing that it would NOT work, only with 2.4.x kernel.
So, what I did in the end was delete the RAID ARRAY, unplug one of the hard drives, and then try booting (the exact same installation that failed with the RAID ARRAY / dual hard drives).... And it worked perfectly fine with the 1 hard drive.

So, my question is, is it possible to get RAID / Dual Hard Drives onto Suse 9.1 kernel 2.6.x ? If so, how the heck....

What about Fedora?

Hi

The controller might work normally without any drivers. At least that's how an HPT raid controller of mine works. So why not use the controller as a normal IDE controller, and just use software RAID instead?

I read a test about this a while ago. There is hardly any performanence difference, it's more important to put each drive on a separate controller. So if you have 4 disks, the fastest setup would be two disks on the promise controller, two on the regular controllers, and software raid. Four disks on the promise controller will be slower.

Best regards,
Guttorm.

I later found out about software raid although it seems difficult for someone who has not done anything near it before. I will give it a try.

This is where I was told : http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/04/91_fakeraid.html

That should answer anyone elses questions that are also having problems with this.
